I used to draw comics - especially the grandiose and doomed E Motel - but in the 2008s it finally died with a whimper.
This is perhaps the first comic I’ve ever drawn since.
Don’t bother encouraging me. Your encouragement is no match for my pessimism.
I’m going through old papers and found a box full of original E Motel art, along with these old sketches of what was to follow in 2008. By then, however, sitting down to devote eight hours of brain strain to the comic on top of what was becoming a stressful fulltime job was getting too much. This last comic was saved, but never uploaded.
(For those of you who can’t make the sketches out, it turns out Layla (the woman) also had to go through therapy like Greg (the half-alien guy who lent her his coat). In fact, Greg had brain surgery, where an alien device was removed. Afterwards, there was to be some humour involving Kristo, a sort of half-alien space guru, and three idiot ‘hippies’ who think, assuming they’re capable of such effort, that they’ll have the secrets of the universe divulged to them.)
As I’ve said before, E Motel never really had a proper plot, because I was too impatient to just get something OUT there damnit! In a way, that impatience helped me blast through what would have been crippling anxiety and overthinking. But it also sowed the seeds for its collapse as I lurched from one blind alley to the next.
Subsequently I’ve tried to reboot the concept, but never really had much success. In part, this is thanks to the small voice asking is this really worth it? You want something more grounded in reality, but you don’t know shit about human relationships and that sort of fiction bores you stiff anyway. Don’t waste your time.
Nobody cares what you want to do anyway, the small voice goes on, you’re just a resource to be exploited to them. Do what they want and maybe they’ll leave you a few crumbs and go away.
I hate that voice.
Learning.
What makes this comic is the haunted look in the father’s eyes. He knows how things work, but it doesn’t mean he likes it.

I never really got into Rosenberg’s previous opus Goats, but this comic is simultaneously topical, surreal and consistently funny.
Every Friday there’s another episode of an ongoing story, the first famously being Sciencemaster Adler and his mysterious fan. Or fans. Or maybe they’re not fans but are sentient vegetable people. (Mind you, this is a multiverse, so maybe there’s sentient clothing accessory people as well, but that could be heading into the Douglas Adams Territories.)

So here’s a quick something I whipped up with my faithful Tombo pen, although it’s less a tribute to James Kochalka Superstar’s autobiographical comic and more a shill for Joe’s Goals.
Actually, since kicking off using Joe’s Goals, I seem to be more creative, or getting more done. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go outside, take a nice long walk, add a few more smilies to the chart.
Throwing out some old papers and found these doodles for, mostly, a stillborn comic concept I called “Gutterpuppetry”, since I was listening a lot toGutterpuppetby The Children’s Hour at the time.
The “Toys in Heck” doodles were inked with a double-ended Tombo N15 pen, which has a nib on one end and a brush-like thing on the other. I never did anything with the poor guys since they were too heavily influenced by Jhonen Vasquez.

I love this post way too much! Brave New World is and has been my favorite book since I first read it in school. (and many times since)
I think they were both right. But Huxley was probably more right.
They’re definitely both right.
One must look at the scope of the world, not just America or “developed” societies.
If they are both (which I believe they were) talking about the downfall of man as a whole, and not specific societies, Orwell applies to the middle-east, the U.S. puppet-states, and horrible acts against humanity in general such as Guantanamo.
Huxley simply pertains to the “developed” world.

Just remember that Orwell's 1984 world also included distractions such as propaganda films, lotteries, and trashy entertainments he described as prolefeed. Concepts that Harry Harrison also picked up on in the Bill the Galactic Hero series.
As Ivan Stang once noted, “They don’t need the TV to watch you as long as you’re watching the TV”.
