WHAT ARE BIRDS
Second round! I didn’t realise I’d taken so many. No wonder my phone was almost dead.
- The sad remains of the Zephyrometer, struck by lightning last year;
- Terns a-go-go on the old flying boat pier (now fenced off to the public due to safety reasons);
- An attempted zoom on the nearest tern - I think they’re Caspian terns;
- Yeah, nah, somehow I think the little blues wouldn’t dig this place, too busy (and a local agreed with me);
- Just up from the yacht club premises;
- Sun, sea, water, and wind;
- The home stretch to the O;
- Oriental Bay. You can’t beat this city on a good day, even if it has been windy today.
I would have taken photos of Black Dog Brewery as well, but they were closed for some reason.

Hello yes! A Science Birb, here to explain the science!
Birb have VERY LARGE EYE in skull. Very good for seeing! But not space for muscle, birb cannot move eye. For mammal to make steady image, keep focus on single thing, always moving eye! Tiny movements, sometimes not even know. But birb cannot make tiny movements! So, birb must move whole head. And that is why the birb can keep steady the head when the body is amovering!
Thank you for listening to a science
I’m crying
That was the greatest scientific explanation I have ever read

The Potoo bird always looks like it just saw something horrifying. [via]

THE POTOO BIRD SEES ALL
And evidently it wishes it couldn’t.
Darwin’s survival of the derpest.
Did some searching and apparently frogmouths really do look like that when startled.
Reblogging for the charming artwork. Maybe I should look at getting back into comics, using this style (and that old-school slapstick) for inspiration.
Along with the mallards who hang out at the pond behind our property, a scaup’s taken up residence. I managed to get these photos of the little guy. Or gal. Whichever.
GPOY
It was either this or a dead end street.
Maybe I’ll post one and dub it GPOML.
